How to Make Your New House Feel Like Home

Unpack and Organize Early

If you’ve moved before, you know how overwhelming unpacking can be. Towering boxes, figuring out where everything belongs—it’s a lot. But think of this as a fresh start, an opportunity to organize yourself and create a space you love from the very beginning. Maybe you weren’t so organized in your last place—here’s your chance to change that! Start with the essentials, like the bedroom or kitchen—spaces that feel familiar and comforting. The sooner you unpack, the sooner this house starts feeling like your home.

Add Personal Items

Bring out the things that make you you—family photos, meaningful artwork, or sentimental keepsakes. Adding these personal touches transforms a house into a home. After all, you’re the one who’ll be enjoying it every day, so don’t be afraid to make your mark.

Use Your Favorite Scents

I’m big on signature scents—there’s something about walking into a space that smells familiar and comforting. Whether you stick to a scent you already love or try something new to mark this fresh chapter, scent sets the tone for memories to come. Think candles, wallflowers (Bath & Body Works has great ones), or essential oil diffusers to add a cozy vibe.

Create Cozy Spaces

One of my favorite things about my own home is how cozy it feels. Soft blankets, throw pillows, and warm lighting make all the difference. Carve out spaces for the things you love—whether it’s reading, drawing, or just relaxing. Creating a little nook for yourself adds a sense of safety and comfort that will always be there for you.

Bring in Greenery

Plants instantly liven up a space, and the calming green can make any room feel more alive. If you’re still settling in, low-maintenance plants are a great option. Not into real plants? Don’t worry—fake plants can still add a touch of beauty (and no judgment here!). It’s your home—do what makes you happy.

Personalize the Walls

Walls are a blank canvas, and they’re the perfect place to showcase your personality. Whether you’re playing with paint colors, hanging mirrors, or hunting for unique decor, this is your chance to get creative. I love exploring local antique shops here in Franklin, TN—it’s amazing what treasures you can stumble upon that add character to your home.

Focus on the Front Door

Your front door sets the tone for your entire home. Think of it as your home’s first impression—both for you and anyone who visits. Add personal touches like a wreath, a welcome mat, or even flowers. I recently got into gardening, and every time I see the flowers by my door, I’m reminded of the care I’ve put into creating a space that feels warm and inviting.

Host a Gathering

What better way to break in a new home than by sharing it with loved ones? Host a small gathering and invite friends or family over to celebrate. Sharing moments, meals, and laughter will quickly create memories that make the space feel yours.

Take Your Time

Making a house a home doesn’t happen overnight. Take it one step at a time, focus on areas that matter most to you, and enjoy the process of creating a space where you feel happy, comfortable, and truly at home.
